Tattoo Pain by Body Area: Which Numbing Cream to Use
Pain ratings and numbing cream recommendations for every major tattoo placement. Ribs, spine, sternum, ankle, arm and more, rated 1 to 10 with the right NUMBX Beast formula for each.
Choosing the right numbing cream strength starts with knowing how painful your placement will be. This guide rates every major tattoo area and tells you exactly which NUMBX Beast formula to use.
Pain Level by Body Area
Ribs
The most painful placement on the body. Thin skin directly over bone with no muscle or fat cushion. A 100% formula applied for 60 to 90 minutes under cling film is the only effective option for this area.
Sternum / Chest
Extremely bony area with little tissue between skin and bone. High nerve density makes this one of the most requested areas for maximum strength cream.
Spine
Central nervous system proximity makes spine pieces very intense. The vibration from the machine travels through vertebrae. 100% Black recommended for full spinal pieces.
Inner Arm / Ditch
The inner elbow (ditch) and inner bicep have thin, sensitive skin with high nerve concentration. Use Black for ditch pieces, Gold 80% for inner bicep.
Ankle / Foot
Bone is close to the surface and the foot has dense nerve endings. Difficult to wrap with cling film effectively; use tape to hold the wrap securely.
Hands / Fingers
Exceptionally high nerve density. Very difficult to numb fully due to thin skin and constant movement. 100% Black with full occlusion gives the best result.
Knee / Knee Ditch
Kneecap and back of the knee are both bony, sensitive areas. The popliteal region at the back is particularly nerve-dense.
Neck
Skin is thin and sensitive but muscle and tissue underneath absorb some vibration. Gold 80% is typically sufficient.
Shoulder
One of the most tolerable placements. Thick muscle and tissue. Gold mid-range formulas are ideal here.
Outer Thigh
The outer thigh is one of the least painful areas due to large muscle mass and fewer nerve endings. Entry-level Gold works well.
Upper Arm
Generally tolerable. If you have sensitive skin, Green 60% is ideal here.
Back (Upper/Lower)
Large flat area with good tissue coverage. Gold 60% handles most back pieces; Gold 80% for full back sessions over three hours.
